What is a Random Number?

For instance, the heights of students in a school usually follow a normal distribution, with most students being closer to the median height, and fewer students being either very tall or very short. When picking a random number from such a distribution, it’s more likely to be close to the median value than to be extremely high or low.

A random number generator (RNG) is a tool or device that can produce one or more random numbers within a specific range. RNGs can be either hardware-based or pseudo-random. Hardware RNGs might use physical objects, such as dice or coins, to generate numbers.

The Difference Between True and Pseudo-Random Numbers

On the other hand, a pseudo-random number generator (PRNG) uses algorithms to create a sequence of numbers that mimic the properties of truly random numbers. Most computer-based RNGs are pseudo-random, meaning the numbers they generate are not completely random but follow an algorithmic pattern that approximates randomness. While these pseudo-random numbers are suitable for most applications, they should not be used for cryptographic purposes. True random numbers, unlike pseudo-random ones, are generated through physical processes such as atmospheric noise, thermal fluctuations, or quantum phenomena. Generating true random numbers requires careful methods to address any biases introduced by the measurement process.

Random number generators have a wide range of applications. They are used in fields like gaming, cryptography, statistical sampling, and simulations. In gaming, RNGs are used to create unpredictable outcomes, ensuring fair gameplay. In cryptography, while pseudo-random numbers are often used, true random numbers are preferred for secure key generation. Statistical sampling relies on random numbers to ensure unbiased selection, and simulations use them to model real-world processes with randomness.
