Age Calculator

The way age is calculated can vary across different cultures, and this calculator follows the most widely used system. In this standard approach, a person’s age increases on their birthday. For instance, someone who has lived for 3 years and 11 months is considered to be 3 years old, and their age will change to 4 on their upcoming birthday, just a month later. This system is predominantly used in many Western countries.

In some cultures, age is calculated by including or excluding the current year. For example, a person who is 20 years old may be considered the same age as another person in their 21st year of life. A traditional Chinese age system is another variation where a person is considered to be born at age 1, and their age increases on the Chinese New Year, rather than their birthday. For example, if a baby is born just a day before Chinese New Year, they will already be considered 2 years old after the holiday, even though they are only a couple of days old.

There can be some confusion when calculating age using months and days, especially when the starting date is at the end of a month. For instance, from February 20 to March 20 is counted as one month. However, there are different ways to calculate the age from February 28, 2022, to March 31, 2022. One method is to consider February 28 to March 28 as one full month, which would give a result of one month and 3 days. Alternatively, if we treat both February 28 and March 31 as the end of the month, it would result in just one month. Both methods are valid, and we use the former approach in our calculator.

Similar situations can arise when calculating age for dates like April 30 to May 31 or May 30 to June 30, where the number of days in the months can cause discrepancies. The inconsistency in the number of days across months is what leads to these variations, but for simplicity, we adhere to the first method described.
